Wisdom Teeth Extraction

Wisdom teeth are some of the most problematic teeth we have. They are the third and final set of molars to come in. Usually, people get their wisdom teeth when they are in their late teens or early twenties. Wisdom teeth often are not positioned properly and ultimately need to be removed.

Reasons for Wisdom Teeth Removal

If your wisdom teeth are properly aligned and healthy, removal may not be necessary, but sometimes removal is recommended before problems start to prevent issues in the future. Some of the things that can be wrong with wisdom teeth include being positioned horizontally, being angled toward or away from the second molars, or not being fully erupted. When wisdom teeth don’t fully erupt, this means that they are trapped in the jawbone and don’t break through the gums at all or don’t break through completely. These are impacted wisdom teeth, and they can cause pain. When the teeth are partially erupted, an opening is created that allows bacteria to get through.

Wisdom Tooth Extraction Procedure

Wisdom teeth extraction is a normal procedure when the wisdom teeth are fully erupted. When they are only partially erupted or completely trapped under the gums, the extraction is a minor surgical procedure. This can be done under a general anesthetic, or a combination of local and general anesthesia.
